You might be surprised to learn that Boise, Idaho is full of unique local restaurants, breweries, and wineries. The food scene here is constantly growing and evolving. I have been a vegetarian for most of my life, and about two years ago went fully vegan so I am always on the hunt for healthy, local, and delicious plant-based meals. I am based in Boise, and love to eat out — so I think that makes me an expert on vegan restaurants in Boise.
Since there aren’t many strictly vegan restaurants in Boise, I have discovered the restaurants with incredible options for vegans. So, this list includes my favorite vegan restaurants and food in Boise. These range from takeout, dessert shops, and fine dining. Everything on this list is flavorful. No boring food or basic salads included.
Best Vegan Restaurants & Food in Boise
Sweet Treats
I am shocked that I have so many places in this category. Typically, I don’t prefer sweet food, and because most desserts aren’t vegan, I’ve become accustomed to not eating them. However, these places below make some of the most delicious, and indulgent desserts. Non-vegans wouldn’t even notice a difference — besides sweet decadence.
(1) Guru Donuts. There are two locations, but we frequent the one downtown. They always have several vegan options on the menu, and they are always delicious. Guru is known for creative and fun flavors, so make sure to check them out!
(2) Amaru Confections. The vegan cupcakes here are works of art! They are almost too beautiful to eat. Not only do they cater to vegans, but they are also conscious of other dietary needs, and package their treats safely.
(3) Cinnaholic. Cinnamon rolls that are 100% vegan — sign me up! These rolls have become our Christmas morning tradition and one of our favorite breakfast treats. They are large enough to share but too delicious to be that selfless.
(4) The STIL. This local ice cream company creates the most unique flavors. Their shops guarantee a fun vibe, and they always have several booze-infused and vegan options on their menu.
Fine Dining
(5) Chandler’s Steakhouse. Shocking that a steakhouse would make this list! I’m equally as surprised that it has become one of my favorite places for dinner. Chandler’s is one of the nicest restaurants in Boise, with a lively scene, beautiful decor, and live jazz music. They have a vegan pre-fixe option here that is so flavorful and filling. Add their 10-minute martini and you’re in vegan heaven!
(6) Barbacoa. This restaurant has the most intriguing and eclectic decor. It has a funky and lively vibe, with equally unique food and drinks. The service here is fantastic, so just ask your server for the vegan options and they will give you some mouthwatering choices to select from.
Vegan-heavy Menus
(7) High Note Cafe. This spot is 100% plant-based! They are open for breakfast, brunch, and lunch with so many different options to choose from. The High Note Cafe is located downtown in a quaint building perfect for a cozy vegan meal.
(8) Mai Thai. If you love Thai food, then you need to try Mai Thai! They have vegan appetizers, sushi, and main dishes. So many different options, but my favs are their yellow curry and spring rolls. The drinks here are also creative, beautifully presented, and delicious.
(9) Pie Hole. There are a couple of locations throughout town, and the name is accurate. Tiny spots with gigantic pizzas! These thin-crust pies come in many unique flavors, and they have a dedicated vegan section on their menu. Select one of their recipes or create your own. If you like spicy, make sure to add the brown sugar roasted jalapenos to your pie.
(10) Lost Shack. When a sushi shack and a brewery join forces, you get Lost Shack! Located in a super cool spot Lost Shack is a popular restaurant. They have great vegan sushi and bowls, and creative drinks made with sake. And… I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Lost Grove beer! Bonus: Lost Shack is next door to The STIL ice cream in East Boise, so you can hit both at the same time!
(11) Lemon Tree. I am so excited that Lemon Tree just opened a new location inside The STIL at Harris Ranch! Since the opening of this new location, I have eaten there at least several times a week. They have several unique vegan sandwiches and the BEST vegan tomato bisque. On the weekend’s the Harris Ranch location serves breakfast with tons of vegan breakfast sandwich options. Delish!
(12) Bardenay. This is the nation’s first restaurant & distillery, and everything is so delicious! There is a location in downtown Boise and a nearby town, Eagle. The menu here is so expansive with several great vegan options. My absolute favorite is their Buddha Bowl, which I could honestly eat every day, along with their sweet potato fries.
Honorable Mentions
- BBQ4Flife. This place is super popular. When I mention that I’m vegan this restaurant is frequently suggested to me. Has options for meat and non-meat eaters.
- 208 Pho and Vegan. Located next to the Boise Co-op in Boise’s North End, this is a popular spot amongst “foodies” I know. I just haven’t had the chance to try it yet — but it’s on my list.
