We love to take our pup with us on vacation. Having them makes for some great memories, but also can add some complications. Below are eight simple tips, along with a starter packing list to make traveling with your furry friends more enjoyable.
10 Tips for Traveling with a Dog
- Always have water available. It can get hot for them in the car, especially if they are in the back.
- Take frequent breaks. If driving a long distance plan to provide enough breaks to let the pup out of the car to walk, drink water, or go potty. Map out the rest stops to plan your breaks.
- Get familiar. When arriving at your destination take the dog on a walk to discover and get them comfortable with their new surroundings and bathroom.
- Don’t leave them alone immediately. Give them some time to get comfortable with the new setting. Giving treats and snuggles sets a positive tone.
- Bring a collapsible dog crate. These are so great for travel, especially if your dog doesn’t need one while in the car. However, for the hotel room, they are fantastic.
- Spoil them. We provide a lot of treats and bones for when we are in the room, and especially when they are alone to occupy themselves.
- Consider a dog walker. Talk with the concierge or host for a dog walking/sitting service if you’ll be away for extended times. This is a great thing to utilize and will make for a very happy pup.
- Don’t change their diet. Keep their meals and food consistent with what is offered at home.
- Use Command Hooks. These are so easy to put up and take down, and they keep your leash visible and out of the way.
- Freshen the air. Some room spray can go a long way when you have a dog in a small space. Neutralize the dog smell with a good fragrance.
