Situated deep within beautiful Idaho mountains with 2,800 vertical feet and 1,100 acres of terrain Tamarack Ski Resort is the perfect winter destination for families. Whether it’s skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or having a drink by the fire — this Idaho ski resort has something for everyone. They even offer guided ice fishing!
Tamarack Resort has a special place in my heart. My family has been coming here for over 10 years. The resort has gone through many changes, but it is now under new ownership and big, exciting things are happening — which I’m so happy to see!
Tamarack is in Donnelly, Idaho which is about 90 miles north of Boise. After landing at the Boise Airport (BOI) you’ll have a 2-hour drive through the beautiful scenery before arriving at your winter paradise.
Lodging
Tamarack used to be a well-kept secret; however, word is spreading about this treasure. So, if you want to come and visit (which you should) then I suggest making reservations far in advance.
I recommend staying at the resort so you can easily access the trails, restaurants, and amenities. There isn’t a traditional hotel onsite. However, there are many different lodging options ranging from condos to large estate homes to accommodate your group size and preferences. For families, this type of lodging is ideal so that you can cook, spread out, and enjoy quality time. You can book these directly through the resort or vacation rental sites such as VRBO, Airbnb, and Vacasa.
Want easy access to the slopes? Then read the descriptions to select a ski-in/ski-out lodging option. This way you can step out your door and onto the trails.
Bringing a Dog?
Tamarack is dog friendly. We have always brought our pups here, and they love tromping through the snow. When booking your lodging you’ll need to select a cottage, townhouse, or chalet that is dog friendly. The chalets and cottages do offer more private outdoor space, which is convenient when needing to give pups a potty break.
Make sure to take your pups on a snowshoe adventure, snowy walk, or just outside for playtime in the powder. Not only will they have a blast, but they will be so exhausted they will just lay by the fire the rest of the day.
Dining at Tamarack Resort
All the lodging options at the resort (except for the hotel-style rooms) have kitchens so you can bring groceries with you. If you forget anything there’s an onsite market, but if you don’t feel like cooking the resort has plenty of dining options in the Village. Our favorite is The Reserve.

- Skiing or snowboarding. There are runs to fit all levels. However, if they are new to the sport, then sign them up for the Sports School or private lessons.
- Snowball fight and sledding. This is a must-do activity! We have always found a great spot to sled either at our rental or behind the Osprey Lodge. Consider getting a snowball maker to make the activities more fun.
- S’mores by the fire pits.
- Hot Tubbing. Many of the rentals have a private hot tub. But there’s also a large one at the Osprey Lodge, and they provide towels and a place to change.
- Hot chocolate at Clearwater Coffee Company.
- Puzzles and games inside by the fire. Sitting inside with a view of the beautiful snow can provide for some wonderful quality time.
- Scenic chairlift ride. You don’t have to ski or snowboard to enjoy the amazing views from the top of the mountain.
- Visit the Children’s Center. If the parents want to hit the slopes, then have the little ones spend some time at the Children’s Center.
