Mountain peaks, wildflowers, fresh air, and tons of sunshine are what we found over Labor Day weekend in Sun Valley. Summer in Sun Valley is incredible! From ice skating shows, concerts, outdoor movies, onsite bowling, and much more — there are activities for everyone in your family.
Most people think about winter in this iconic destination. But summer in Sun Valley should get the attention it deserves. The cooler mountain air, scenery, and sun make for the most beautiful family vacation destination.
Swimming in the Idaho Mountains
The resort has three pools available to guests, with two of them open year-round. We spent our pool time at the Lodge Pool because of its proximity to our condo. The pool is heated to the perfect temperature and offers plenty of seating to relax and enjoy the view. And while relaxing, make sure to order a drink and lunch from the bar located just off the pool.
The adults enjoyed mojitos and the kids loved their virgin daquiris while playing an intense game of Marco Polo! The pool was the perfect place to savor the final weekend of summer.
Summer Activities in Sun Valley
This year-round resort has so many summer activities to get everyone outdoors. There are lawn games and chairs scattered throughout the grounds and in the evenings, there are concerts, outdoor movies, and other events. And for those wanting more outdoor adventure, there are nearby trails perfect for hiking and mountain biking, and even lift-assisted trails too!
And make sure to catch an ice-skating show! The resort publishes their schedule online and many of the performers are world-famous professional skaters. Want to test out your own ice-skating skills? Then you’re in luck! They have public hours so you can skate outdoors in the summer — which is so much fun.
Sun Valley also has three golf courses each with different views and challenges. Our group tried out White Clouds and couldn’t stop talking about how beautiful the course was! Then afterward you are close to the Sun Valley Club to grab lunch and a beverage on the patio. This restaurant is always a must-visit when we are in town!
Movies in the Mountains
Memories were made during this trip! We watched Goonies outside on a huge screen, and the Rise of Gru at the Opera House, the Sun Valley Resort theater. During summer the Sun Valley Resort hosts movies on the lawn where you bring your picnic and enjoy a family-friendly movie under the stars! Then on our last night, we decided to splurge and rent out the resort’s theater for a private viewing of the Rise of Gru. This was so much fun!
Sun Valley Resort Apartments
We traveled with friends for this long weekend vacation, so we decided to reserve a 3-bedroom apartment instead of separate hotel rooms. This was our first time staying at the Lodge Apartments but will definitely stay at this section of the resort again.
The apartments are close to the Sun Valley Lodge and provide space for families to cook, relax, and enjoy quality time together. Our apartment had three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room and full-size kitchen, and a patio perfect for morning coffee or viewing kids playing in the grass.
The rooms can be rented out separately, which meant that the doors required room keys to enter. So, this was the only thing that took a little bit of getting used to. But otherwise, these are a great option for families or groups traveling together.
